This sculpture was designed for the 2018 Bloomberg Philanthropies Awards for Global Tobacco Control Ceremony.
Kéré’s trophy lets wood and brass intertwine. While one material is regrowing, the other one is fully recyclable. Two sinked oval holes give the log its characteristics and emphasize its organic shape. The mechanical subtraction of the wood reinterprets traditional African carving techniques used to produce furniture.
Complementing the natural appearance of the wood, the reflecting brass surrounds the log like a medal honoring the recipients’ engagement.
This award represents Francis Kéré’s commitment to socially responsible architecture that focuses on participation, innovative use of material and sustainability.
