Descriptive note of the restructuring of the fishery site of the Zhou Shan waterfront
The Zhou Shan - Locus Project is situated in one of the important fishing ports of the Chinese coastline. The aim of the intervention is an urban transformation of an ex - industrial area into a tourist and cultural area, while sustaining the meaning of the former place.
The site: The restruction area, which is situated on an island separated by the sea about 300 meters from the mainland and the city of Zhou Shan, is dedicated mainly to fishery. The plot of land consists of numerous enclosed buildings, docks and warehouses, built according to the needs of several decades. To the south, the construction area lies next to a very steep hillside of a small mountain while the northern part is characterized by banks which are running through the site. The landscape of industrial sites is typically very divers. The existing architecture is heterogeneous concerning the many different shapes of buildings and shows the various local ways of construction. The mountain, the sea, the city and the hundreds of boats unmistakably constitute the strong elements of the environment of the site. At nighttimes, the remarkably multicoloured lightings create a visual effect by illuminating the skyline of the city and cause the outstanding mountain just above the fishery to glow.
The project: The 4 privileged axes of the project development:
- The public space and the relations with the context and its intermediate spaces up to the private use
- The flexibility of spaces over time
- Sustainable climatic systems (natural ventilation, passive solar energy)
- Quality of spaces; public, semi-private, private
By providing a plane space to be adapted in multiple ways, spaces have the characteristic to change with time, according to the manners and needs of the users. We wish the areas to be the object of the artists' application. Therefore, the minimal equipment will allow each artist to invest in his/her space according to their personality.
The purpose of this privatization (temporary or not), seems to be a form of commitment required from the artists to move from the status of consuming the available space, to create their own space where they live and work. Another purpose is also the wish of the artists to create their own space instead of using a space which is given and leaves only minimal room for individualization. The gallery can be either private and independent, or operating in conjunction with all the workshops.
We create privileged spaces of coexistence , through the kitchens, bathrooms or the tea house. In this way the exercise of art production can find its place in the different spaces. We have developed solutions that allow natural ventilation and the use of passive solar energy in our buildings. The design reflects on the hierarchy of public, semi-public and private spaces, according to the needs of the visitors and users. We consider it essential to allow smooth internal buildings and see P12 and P14 as a single entity and not as isolated volumes, taking into account individual privacy. The volumes of P14 and P12 are modular and each area can be used as a single space or divided into several independent workshops according to the needs.
The tea house located on the roof of the P14 is a resort that refers to the original shape of the building in its current use, and meets a part of daily Chinese culture.
